Ex-Labour chief revealed as director of foreign workers processing firm

PKR's Lee Chean Chung at an earlier press conference last week revealing the link between Bestinet and former Home Minister Tan Sri Azmi Khalid. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 27, 2015.PKR has named another director of Bestinet Sdn Bhd (Bestinet), the company caught in a storm over the controversial biometric health checks for migrant workers.Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul and PKR Youth information chief Lee Chean Chung said the director is Datuk Tengku Omar Tengku Bot, who was previously director of the Labour Department and has close ties with former home minister Tan Sri Azmi Khalid, who is also a director of Bestinet.They said both men also have common interests in other companies like Raffles Care."Through his control in JR Joint Resources Holding Sdn Bhd, Omar controls over 99% of Bestinet."Like Bestinet – a RM2 company previously – which had not submitted its accounts to the Registrar of Companies for four years, JR Joint Resources has also not sent in its books since 2010.The latest financial report the company sent was dated in 2007, and this violates the Companies Act 1965," Johari and Lee said in a statement today.They disclosed this today after both Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Azmi failed to answer questions about the controversial biometric health checks for migrant workers.PKR had given the duo a week to explain their roles in the awarding of the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System (FWCMS) contract exclusively to the private IT firm Bestinet.The FWCMS is a website handled by Bestinet, which will also handle online applications for foreign worker quotas, their electronic temporary working permits (ePLKS), and insurance, among others, beginning January 15 this year. All health checkup centres in the source countries, where the workers are from, are also compelled to use the Bestinet system.The arrangement had reportedly caused tension among labour agencies and the Nepali government when they were informed that they must use the new system."Bestinet not only will make huge profits through monopolising the eVDR and biometric system. The company will also cause the increase in cost to hire foreign workers."When the increase in cost is not monitored, it will expose foreign workers to risks of exploitation and human trafficking," Johari and Lee said.The two PKR reps again challenged Zahid and Azmi to explain within 24 hours about their roles and the contract awarded to Bestinet."It is unfortunate that both the minister and former minister have kept mum on the issue together and would not come forward to end the doubts of the people so far."If they do not do so, we will reveal further information that is 'very critical'," they said.Of late, the PKR lawmakers had also raised concerns that Malaysia's national security was at risk due to the use of the new system.They feared that the information in the system was related to border control and immigration, and the sensitive information could be used to threaten the security and sovereignty of the country. – January 27, 2015.

The Israeli military responded to the strike with aerial and ground attacks on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, where a Spanish U.N. peacekeeper was killed in the flare-up.Subsequent reports of Israeli soldiers being abducted during the Hezbollah attack were being investigated by Israel Defense Forces.It was not immediately clear if the attack heralded a significant escalation of cross-border violence or was an isolated incident."At this moment the IDF responds to events in the North. Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup denies ever naming Perkasa specifically in remarks attributed to him which condemned extremists creating discord in the country as 'public enemy number 1'. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 28, 2015.Unfazed by the defamation suit filed by Malay rights group Perkasa today, de facto unity minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup pledged to do "whatever is necessary to defend Malaysia's unity".In shrugging off the suit, the minister in the prime minister's department said he is ready to face Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali in court."I must have done something right for Ibrahim Ali to sue me. I will do whatever is necessary to defend Malaysia's unity and am prepared to face Ibrahim Ali or anybody else in our courts. Truth and justice will always prevail," he said in a statement emailed to The Malaysian Insider.He said peace and stability are the nation's "invaluable" wealth and the Barisan Nasional-led Federal government always strived to preserve these two pillars, which he described as “national treasures". Failure to protect, preserve and strengthen the nation's unity would lead to the destruction of the country's economy and development, he added."As a minister overseeing national unity, I made a stand to not tolerate racial and religious bigotry tearing apart the fabric of this harmonious society. It is both my responsibility and mission to see such incidents of extremism nullified," he said.In its suit filed at the Jalan Duta High Court earlier today, Perkasa claimed that Kurup had allegedly labelled the group as extremist.Perkasa is seeking an apology from the Sabah minister over his remarks as well as damages.In its statement of claim, Perkasa claimed that in two statements made on December 24, 2014 and yesterday, Kurup had allegedly accused Perkasa and another Malay non-governmental organisation Isma of being bigots who must not be tolerated.He had also allegedly said “we must not condone their extremist voices and actions".Perkasa said the statements implied that it was an extremist group that used religion to spark violence and cause unrest in the country. The alleged statements also suggested that the group had caused fear and disunity in the country.Ibrahim said because of such statements, Perkasa’s reputation has been damaged and the Malay rights group was viewed negatively by the public.However, Kurup yesterday said he did not mention Perkasa nor did he refer to a specific group when dubbing extremists who play up racial and religious issues as “public enemy number 1"."The simple logic is that if these extremists are instilling fear in our society, jeopardising our painstakingly built unity and trying to hijack the Malaysian way of life, they are, therefore, the nation's public enemy No. 1," he had said in his opening address at the 17th Malaysia Strategic Outlook Conference 2015 yesterday. – January 28, 2015.

Gaji Mejar Zaidi dikembalikan TUDM

Mejar Zaidi Ahmad kembali menerima gajinya untuk bulan Januari pagi ini, sehari selepas berita gajinya 'ditarik balik' Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (TUDM) pada 22 Januari lalu disiarkan Malaysiakini semalam.

Menurut Zaidi, pada awal pagi ini beliau menerima mesej dari pegawai gaji pangkalan TUDM Butterworth yang memaklumkannya tentang perkara tersebut pagi ini.

Pegawai itu memanjangkan mesej dari Unit Gaji Angkatan Tentera (UGAT) Kuala Lumpur yang memaklumkan terdapat 'kesilapan' dalam urusan gaji beliau sebelum ini.

"Sekitar jam 10 pagi tadi saya terima panggilan dari ketua cawangan tadbir pangkalan udara Butterworth memberitahu yang beliau diarahkan untuk memberitahu saya yang gaji saya sedang dalam proses dimasukkan semula," kata Mejar Zaidi.

Menurut Zaidi, semakan akaun banknya pada jam 12 tengah hari tadi mendapati gajinya sudah dimasukkan semula.

"Terima kasih banyak-banyak kepada semua pihak yang membantu dan mendoakan saya sehingga masalah saya selesai," katanya lagi.

Zaidi, seorang bekas juruterbang pesawat pejuang TUDM semalam memaklumkan gajinya untuk bulan Januari 'ditarik balik' oleh pihak tentera selepas didepositkan pada hari sama, pada 22 Januari.

Beliau menyedari perkara itu selepas meneliti penyata akaun banknya.

Menurut Zaidi, tindakan itu dibuat walaupun pihak TUDM masih belum mengeluarkan surat rasmi penamatan khidmatnya sebagai seorang tentera.

Zaidi dibuang kerja oleh tentera pada udara 12 Januari lalu selepas diputuskan bersalah memberi kenyataan media tentang dakwat kekal tanpa izin Majlis Angkatan Tentera.

All 162 people on board were killed.Indonesia's civilian National Search and Rescue Agency said it would scour the sea for bodies for at least another week."Within one week we will evaluate (our search) depending on the result," agency chief Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo told reporters. "If we can find one or two more bodies, that means we have the opportunity to prolong the operation."The military withdrew from the search on Tuesday, apologising to the victims' families for not being able to do more after a month of work.A multinational search and recovery operation has found 70 bodies in the Java Sea and had hoped to find more after finding the fuselage of the plane. Saravanan has appealed to Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Najib Razak to solve the MIC leadership woes, saying the party president was the prime minister's choice and not that of the party members.Saravanan, who was dropped as Federal Territory liaison chairman, said under party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel , MIC has descended into chaos, with gangsters having the power to stop party leaders, including himself, from entering the party's headquarters."Now prime minister, we have a big problem in MIC, we kept him because he was your choice, he was not the choice of the members."So don't push this away as another MIC problem, it will affect BN too," Saravanan said at a press conference outside the MIC headquarters.
